The Expat Fish

An immersive experience designed, built and showcased at OCAD University. The team project was designed to express the feeling and emotion that an expat goes through due to the shift in their life

Technology Used: Touch Designer, Arduino, Sensors, Kinect

The Idea

All the team members had one thing in common: they left their homelands to find a new 'home' in a different part of the world. We bid farewell to the country we were born and raised in, but we still carry our mother tongue, our religion and every day that we spent there, the goods and the bad that make us better humans today. Like most immigrants, we love our new home and have built it with all the memories, culture, and traditions that we grew up with. Through this installation, we wanted to convey the same

emotions.

The fish, just like us, grows under her mother's protection, and when the time comes, she is ready to explore her path by herself. She meets friends on her way, makes new memories, and sometimes finds herself alone swimming through the deepest parts of the ocean to see the light and a new path of opportunities. Experiencing life the way it comes ...

Set Up

This project consisted of several stages. After Brainstorming, we decided to create a video installation based on the life story of an Expat Fish. We decided to use a combination of analogue and digital techniques to provoke the audience's feelings. For this purpose, we illustrated the fishes and the sea with watercolours. Then we scanned the images and transferred them to the computer.

Step 1:

We animated the fish and the sea using Aftereffect software. Finally, 5 one-minute animations were created. For the music part, We selected many

pre-recorded music for each video and mixed them with various effects to achieve a harmonious musical and visual atmosphere. The predominant volume of music was played and recorded underwater. For this reason, the sounds of the instruments are heard differently from their natural form.

Step 2:

In the next step, we made many artificial objects such as starfish, shells and fish with paste and installed sensors inside them. We used Arduino software to start the animations and set up the sensors. In fact, each animation episode was triggered by a sensor. In the final step, we used Touch Designer software to

project the animation on the wall emotions.
